Here are some thoughts
1. People are still looking for God. Sometimes it depends on what stage you are in life. As I get older the more I appreciate the ancient faith.
2. Do the Americans really understand who Jesus really is and what he represented.
3. Is Christianity seen in a bad light by the media
I host meetings for broken men, and God is very much part of their recovery. Maybe the rich and comfortable feel they do not need God. The poor and broken are the ones seeking God.
I also think there is so much competing with Christianity. The smart phone takes up so much time especially young people. Instant pleasure, and something like Christianity looks boring and irrelevant
You raise a really good point about comfort. I'd suggest that the poor and broken seek the Lord because they're not in a position to numb themselves with food, entertainment, etc.
One can see the ascetic guidance of the Church as a way to strip that numbing out: to face reality rather than the curated experiences we mistake for reality.
